A wireless USB modem and a broadband access card a 2 different things. A USB modem requires that you are close to a WAP (Wireless Access Point, which is usually a wireless router). A broadband access card requires that you subscribe to a wireless internet access service like sprint or verizon. It works similar to the way your cell phone connects to the internet, via satellite. You don’t have to pay for service with a USB modem, but you have to be near an access point at your house or a WiFi hotspot. The broadband access card requires service, but you can get online anywhere.
I am with Tiscali at the moment. I have just signed up to their telephone and 8 meg broadband and have had nothing but trouble for the last two weeks, its now running at less than dial up.
Any suggestions for a good ISP, preferably one that offers unlimited phone calls 24/7. Cost is not really important but reliabilty is.
As with download limits “unlimited” (for your phone calls) is probably in ‘never never land’ (insofar as heavy use might make the provider class your usage as a business and they can then charge for the calls.
From memory, Tiscali charge about 8 pounds a month for their ‘anytime’ calls package. There are some other schemes around that price, a few tied to using a specific ISP (eg Eclipse,PlusNet) while others seem to be available without locking you to a specific ISP. Changing ISP might not be so easy, because Tiscali might have you using their own hardware at the BT exchange, and there have been problems with getting a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) to be used with other ISPs.

How can I use my current cable broadband modem to access internet on Compaq with Windows ME?
I have cable internet w/ wireless. I use the wireless on my computer currently. Trying to hook up an old laptop for my daughter to use strictly for internet. There is no ethernet. There is USB. When I plug the USB into laptop, still cannot connect. Was told I need to download usb driver off internet. How do you do this if you can’t access internet with computer?
A.) if you still have it, use the CD that came with the modem, the drivers should be on it.
B.) Connect with your computer, download the drivers, burn them to CD, put them on floppy, or use a jump drive, copy them to the older PC and install the drivers from there.
Go to the site of the modem manufacturer. My worry for you is that they may or may not support WinME any longer. In a pinch. a laptop should have PCMCIA (PC card) support; you could probably buy a wireless PCMCIA card for not too much money and connect her that way.
