bandwidth monitor linux

A dedicated server is a type of web hosting system where the client leases a web server for themselves only, and no-one else shares it. Having a secure private network can give great peace of mind, particularly for firms who have sensitive personal and financial information concerning their clients.

This also means that you can be assured having full access to the data processing power and memory of the server whenever you may need it, as opposed to being at the mercy of other users on your server who may decide to take up a lot of power or memory just when you need it most.

Many suppliers of dedicated servers will let you have unlimited bandwidth, which means that you can have as much online traffic as you want to your dedicated server without being charged any extra fees. A major advantage of leasing dedicated servers is that you can always have the latest top of the range hardware for your business applications, just like when you lease a car and change it after three months to another newer model.

The suppler will have access to the latest technology and you will not be stuck with equipment that is getting more and more out of date. Similarly the dedicated server supplier will be able to save you money. For example they will be able to broker advantageous licensing deals for associated services like control panel access.

Another major advantage of dedicated servers is the ability to choose your operating system, for example Linux or Windows, so you can have the kind of operating system that fits the needs of your business. The ability to have full remote control of your dedicated server is an important requirement. This way, you can have access to the server control panel whenever you want, from anywhere in the world. You may need for example to re-boot your server, and with this capability you can do it yourself.

Effective technical support is vital if you have a dedicated server. You need to have access to experts whenever you need them, and the best dedicated server suppliers will be able to provide this kind of support twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. These experts will be able to manage and monitor your server, particular during times when there is a lot of online traffic.

The best dedicated server suppliers will have assembled a comprehensive online knowledge base, where you can read frequently asked questions. This is a great way to get a steer on what to do, especially at the beginning of a new arrangement. It is important to work with a dedicated server suppler who has a flexible back-up capability, which can be added to as your business grows, or you amalgamate with other companies.

Most suppliers of dedicated servers will have a number of packages that they can offer you. These will be typical arrangements of hardware and levels of management and monitoring that they find works well with other clients who are similar to you in size and business needs.

mobile broadband speeds explained

Orange is the new market leader in mobile broadband in the UK, having recently overtaken both 3 and Vodafone. Although Orange primarily markets their mobile broadband at the home user, they have recently introduced a range of business tariffs. One thing that must be mentioned is that their home product has a limit of 3GB, their business tariff is advertised as unlimited, but is subject to their fair usage policy of (wait for it) 3GB. Since I’ve had a dig it’s only fair to point out that you also get inclusive Wi-Fi minutes and the business traveler plans include some roaming data (only 15MB though).

One of the reasons that Orange has faired so well is that they have targeted home users. Because the home user market is much bigger than the business market (which Vodafone have been chasing), and their network is far superior in size and quality than both T-Mobile and 3, they have became the market leader almost overnight. This also has a lot to do with the renewed drive to improve the company following the appointment of former Virgin Mobile supreme Tom Alexander as CEO.

If you have searched online hoping to gage people’s opinions of their service you will clearly see mixed reactions. This can easily be explained. Firstly people have very high expectations of any service labeled as ‘broadband’ and expect to experience similar speeds to what can be achieved from fixed line broadband. Not only is this not the case, but the speeds you can achieve will vary dramatically depending upon the area you are in, the strength of signal you are receiving, and also how many other people are using the 3G service at the same time as you. These aren’t Orange issues; they are mobile broadband issues that affect all providers.

The following are differing examples of customer opinion as posted on broadband comparison website WhyBroadband.co.uk:

James; “I thought that I would be getting proper broadband but sometimes it’s really slow, so watching videos on youtube can be a problem.â€

Dave; “All in all the service meets my expectations. I haven’t been to an area where I have not been able to use it, although download speeds can vary dramatically. Excellent if you need broadband on the go but if not, stick to cable or phone line based broadband.â€

Orange uses standard UK mobile broadband technology which routes your data via their 3G mobile network. In order to use the service you will need to have a laptop or PC running either Windows XP or Vista. As with every other UK operator the setup is easy, simply plug your USB modem, dongle, or data card into your computer and your good to go.

For most people mobile broadband is simply a fad, fueled by the providers offering of a free laptop. Clearly mobile broadband isn’t for everyone. Check the coverage in your area and if landline broadband is an option and you don’t need access to the internet in locations other than your home, take it. If you feel you are missing out on a free laptop look around as AOL have been known to give away a laptop with their fixed line broadband deals.
