Where will I find the downstream attenuation and noise margin values?
I need the values to find the fastest broadband speed on my phone line.
It depends on the router you’re using.
Usually you’d go into your internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (although there are others). You’ll probably be asked for a username and password. Assuming you haven’t changed it and you don’t know it you’ll probably be able to look it up on http://www.routerpasswords.com/
Thsi will open up the router setup pages. have a look over the menu and there’s likely to be a manu page called something like ‘connection status’ If not, you might have to go through each page manually.
The attenuation will be a fixed value but it’s worth checking the noise ratio (might be called snr) over a period of a few days and making a note of minimum, maximum and average. There’s no point basing it on the minimum as then anything less than perfect conditions and your connection will drop out.
You’ll actually get quite an accurate idea just based on the attenuation unless there’s a significant noise problem on your line.
It barely works for windows, it is not a very good card. You can not activate it directly for macs at this time. From the Virgin Mobile site:
Broadband2Go only supports Windows Vista or XP at this time.
Novatel Wireless does provide drivers that allow the MC760 to be successfully configured to connect on both MAC & Linux. The MAC drivers are preloaded on the MC760 along with a MAC user guide provided by Novatel Wireless. However, you will need to first activate the device on a PC with Windows XP or Vista prior to installing the MAC or Linux drivers.
We hope to be able to include a method to activate on MAC in the near future.
Is it possible to share files and printer with a wired Ethernet router WITHOUT a broadband modem/connection?
Is it possible to share files and printer with a wired Ethernet router WITHOUT a broadband modem/connection
Yes,
If your Router does not provide DHCP services, then manually assign IPs on each PC TCP/IP protocol. Remember to increment each PC, start with IP addresses as 192.168.1.101 then the next one is 192.168.1.102 etc… All the masks would be 255.255.255.0.
In the Propertys of the computer, make sure that each PC is in the same workgroup
If you have difficulty seeing the PCs, then add the IPX/SPX protocol
Add File and Printer Sharing.
In the printers folder, right click on the printer and share it
Right click on the folders you want to share, enable sharing.
Have fun

Can I create a wireless home network using a laptop with wireless broadband access?
I have a laptop with a Verizon wireless broadband PCI card that allows me to access the internet. Is there any way I can share this internet access and create a wireless home network with it? Can I just connect a wi-fi (wireless) router to the laptop and have it work?
Unless you have another wireless card, the problem would be connecting it such that you would have a separate network. I mentioned this on another question the other day. If your laptop has a Ethernet port, then you can get a combination wired / wireless router, hook it up (i be live you would need to do it via cable) and configure it such that the laptop would be a gateway. I have sympathy for your family when you go to work with your laptop.
