The most important step in building a wireless network is selecting the right components. Before you set out for the electronics store in search of the parts and pieces you need, you may want to review my previous articles about planning your network and what standards there are to choose from.

Typically, you are only searching for three types of equipment if you establishing a wireless network for you personal computers to share files, share devices (such as a printer) and establish a connection between your home or office and the outside world (Internet access). You may need several of one or more of these but your selection really comes down to deciding upon these three things.

Network Interface Adapter

The protocol (simply the language standard of a communication method) used in connectivity between computers and printers on a network in your home or at your office is known as Ethernet. What is confusing is that this is the language standard but it is not method by which the components communicate. Therefore, there must be some intermediary device that can translate these internal component communications and the Ethernet protocol. These devices are known simply as a network interface adapter. You probably know this by another name. Commonly referred to as a network interface card (NIC) this device is installed in or to your computer and provides the connectivity to the Ethernet network. A desktop PC’s NIC is usually a card that is installed inside the case and inserted into one of the slots on your system’s motherboard. More and more, this functionality is being built into the mother board of desktop PCs and is usually an integral component on portable PCs.

Access Point

A wireless access point, also known as a base station, is a device that provides a translation and handles protocol conversion from the wired side of your inbound Internet connection (usually a DSL or Cable Modem) and the wireless side of your network. This is a must in order to create a wireless network.

Sometimes, the access point may be an installed component of a DSL or Cable modem and/or router putting all of these components in one, easy to install and manage device. Having these components bundled can provide a better value as it will be more cost effective when combined with functions of other components that you have decided to include in your wireless network:

Hub or Switch – A hub is device that provides a physical connection for wired pc’s in a network. A switch is sometimes referred to as an intelligent hub that adds traffic management capability.

Router – A device that allows multiple computers to share a single Internet connection. As mentioned, some routers can include built-in a broadband modem and wireless access in one device

Wireless Network Interface Adapter

This device is similar to a NIC but provides wireless functionality. More and more computers are being built with this device already included as the popularity of wireless networks continue to grow.

What’s new in video chat? Although the technology for using a web cam to send live pictures and video over the internet has been around for a long time, video chat technology continues to get better and better. Since the tragedy of 9-11, when businesses started traveling less, it became a great way for businesses to communicate with distant clients, other branches, and other businesses. Video chat can also bring individuals and families who are far apart closer together through the “magic” of the internet.

When businesses use video chat to conference rather than using a simple conference call on the telephone, they can not only see reactions of the people that they are talking to, but they can have a more “natural” conversation with everyone in the room. Of course in order to use all of these features you will need to have the correct software, equipment, and internet connection. Both users should have the same video software, or at least compatible chat software. If you are on a chat room site they will provide you with a software download. Then, you will need a camera. You can get an inexpensive web cam, but the pictures may be grainy and unclear, or you can get a video camera with USB 2.0 or Firewire installed. Your computer should be at least a Pentium 4 or G4 processor with a video and sound card and your internet connection should be at least 128 kpbs-no dial up.

Chatting over the internet can be a fun and productive way to interact with others.

Managing Your IT Network Infrastructure with IPSWITCH WhatsUpGold

As your network infrastructure grows, it becomes a challenge to monitor every single device in the organization. These include server services, server diskspaces, application ports, network devices such as routers, switches and firewall. It becomes justifiable to have a Network Monitoring Tool that can monitor the uptime and performance of these equipments and services. Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold is capable of doing just that plus it is very easy to install and configure.

Network discovery can be defined by IP address range, SNMP SmartScan, Network Neighborhood & HOSTS file. Unlike other Network Monitoring Tools, WhatsUp Gold does not need an agent to be installed on individual servers. All that is required is the Administrator credentials to access the network attached devices SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). I fact, with the Premium Edition, you can add WMI (windows Management Instrumentation) performance monitors to gather information of the devices.

Other than accessing the WhatsUp Gold console on the Server, you can administer via Web Console which is also installed during the initial installation. You can go 1 step further and change the default Web Console screen to your corporate picture (just like I did).

There are 3 types of monitoring that WhatsUp Gold does:-

1) Active monitors

Active monitors are responsible for watching over device services. Active monitors regularly poll the device services for which they are configured and wait for responses. If a query is returned with an expected response, the queried service is considered “up.” If a response is not received, or if the response is not expected, the queried service is considered “down” and a state change is issued on the device.

Active monitors are stored in and configured from the Active Monitor Library.

2) Passive monitors overview

Passive monitors are responsible for listening for device events. Note: Because passive monitors do not poll devices on a regular basis, they use less network bandwidth than active monitors.

Passive monitors gather information that goes beyond simple Up or Down service and device states by listening for a variety of events. For example, if you want to know when someone with improper credentials tries to access one of your SNMP-enabled devices, you can assign the default Authentication Failure passive monitor. The monitor listens for an authentication failure trap on the SNMP device, and logs these events to the SNMP Trap Log. If you assign an action to the monitor, every time the authentication failure trap is received, you will be alerted.

It is highly recommended to use passive monitors together with active monitors to provide a powerful network management.

3) Performance monitors overview

Performance monitors are responsible for gathering information about performance components of the devices. The gathered data is then used to create reports that trend utilization and availability of these device components.

WhatsUp Gold performance monitors gather data from the following five device components:

CPU utilization

Disk utilization

Interface utilization

Memory utilization

Ping latency and availability

Additionally, you can create custom performance monitors to track specific SNMP or WMI performance counters.

Other than providing a tool to monitor your network, WhatsUp Gold is able to alert you by sending text messages, playing a sound, sending an application or even text SMS. All that is required for SMS forwarding is a mobile broadband modem with a subscription plan with a local provider of course! :)

In conclusion, Ipswitch Whatsup Gold is an effective and yet a simple tool to monitor the network and does a good job in alerting the network admins.
